Why would I put a 30mm on it when it came out of the factory with a 32mm? :?

Re: Honda XL 350 1978 Clutch plates.

Post by Newtsalad » Wed Nov 29, 2017 9:59 pm

I've been looking into a clutch overhaul. Not exactly indicated by slip, but I'm mindful the bike is 40 years old, and on the last East Anglian Rideout aliengravy took out the C200, and the cork delaminated from the plates leaving the clutch useless.

Maybe its modern oils. I had put Castrol Power 1 fully synth in it, which wasn't around 54 years ago when cork was bonded to steel!

And as it's looking more likely that the XL will be going to Austria in June, might be wise to overhaul the clutch.

Silvers have the parts. Cork lined plate 22201-286-010 or CCCAB-286-010P at £6.60 each inc. VAT and I need 7.

I decided to check out EBC. They don't do plates for a '78 XL 350. I discovered the plates are the same as the 1975 250 Motorsport. EBC don't do a kit for that either.

However further research, and EBC do a kit for the HONDA CB 550 F/F1/F2/K3 1978-1980, which uses the same plates!

Plates are EBC CK1146 and springs are CSK009.

UPDATE 16/5/2018

Clutch kit CK1146 arrived and I just found that the 7th plate is thicker and the tangs larger. This kit is for a CX500/CB500.
Spent some considerable time on the phone with EBC technical, and it seems that EBC kit CK1131 contains 7 plates of the dimensions I need.
It's on it's way and a return has been accepted for the CX500 kit.

Latest, I chopped an inch off the HT lead and replaced the cap with a posh red NGK cap.

I lowered the needle in the carb 2 notches.

22 mile run, ran fine, no missing and baulking. I may need to raise the needle 1 I reckon. Which will put it on notch 4. Exactly where the workshop manual says it should be! :D

Many engines run better with a smaller carb, especially if you're not after the last few % of top performance, but rather look for midrange driveability.

32 mm instead of 40 mm on BMW R100 boxers, for instance

Edit: I didn't catch that you didn't use the 36mm Mikuni after all

I've only this year dipped my toe in the water with BMW. R80 RT. Yes, sorting the Bing carbs wasn't exactly pleasurable.

Apparently, the 36mm Mikuni gives quite a bit more power. I'm not fussed about that, just want the bike looking roughly like it should, and useable. (The front mudguard is a £17 modern affair that bolted straight on. I don't want to risk damaging the original, which I have set aside.)

DRAG90 knows a fair bit about these, and I think he runs a 40mm or larger on his project. Apparently these engines have a fair bit of development potential. I shall leave mine be, and be happy it has a margin of comfort! :D

Re: Honda XL 350 1978 Smaller rear sprocket.

Post by Newtsalad » Thu Nov 30, 2017 12:48 pm

EBC Clutch ordered this morning, collect it wednesday.

I've been trying to source a smaller rear sprocket for road use. First gear is virtually redundant, The original sprocket is 45 tooth, and there's no other options it would seem. Space around the front sprocket is incredibly tight, no scope there for a bigger front sprocket.

I decided to call JT sprockets technical line. I got a very nice chap with an Irish accent who was incredibly helpful, and ran various searches on his database for me.

Didn't have much luck, but possibly JTR 606 for a Gilera Apache is a contender, not sure the 110mm centre hole will be right, might be a tad less on the XL, hard to tell with it on the bike. It is however, 130mm stud centres, 8mm studs, and 520 chain. Only available in 43 tooth though, not much of a raise in gearing. But at less than £20 posted, it might be worth a punt.

   Had to call them back, it's a 530 chain not a 520.

Option now is JTR 479 available in 38-48 tooth BUT.... stud sizes are 10mm not 8mm. I may open them out on the hub, investigation needed.

I’m sure junior would be able to turn up some stud spacers for you Jim, 10mm outside, 8mm inside width to match the sprocket thickness.
