Complete 1990 C90E - engine shot

Post by Brommo » Sun Nov 27, 2011 7:03 pm

finally got round to taking the head and barrel off my C90 after it stopped about 4 miles outside Ryaeder back in 2010

the bore isn`t `that` bad to be honest

Image

however the piston is knackered. The rings are virtually welded to itself and loads of score lines.

Image

It obviously got extremely hot (lack of oil I assume).

Initial thoughts were to get a rebore and a new piston kit and rebuild as there is no play in the bottom end. However......

the gudgeon pin was as tight as hell in the little end but pressed it out with a socket. This is what you can see

Image

it looks a lot worse than it is (!) but even with fine emery don`t know whether you`d ever get it smooth enough to insert a new gudgeon pin in without damage. Looks like its picked up on something.

so I have two choices really - put a Lifan engine in or break it

I`ve already got 2 other bikes so think I`d rather sell it as a whole rather than break it and post

so

Good points :-

Clean example of a 1990 C90E
New exhaust (Bought off Fuzz) that has only covered 85 miles !
Solid bodywork
Complete (obviously partially stripped non working) engine with all ancillaries i.e carb, airbox, switchgear, brakes etc
2 excellent condition chrome wheels
lockable topbox
it was running beautifully before it cruised to a halt about 18 months ago !

Bad points

Tatty seat that has been patched with black gaffer tape
Non runner
Engine that is only fit for spares or repairs

so offers for the whole lot ? obviously you`ll need a van or trailer to collect !

don`t really wanna break it or put on e bay as too many muppets on there

pm me with offers or for more info/photo`s

cheers

Brom

oh I`m located in Tamworth just off junction 10 of the M42

had a fair few pm`s but have only managed to reply to one of em ? :?:

the rest are stuck in me outbox for some reason ?

forgot to mention I`ve owned it for approx 2 1/2 years and V5 present and in my name

Currently SORNED. It was last MOT`d on 3rd July 2010 with 1 advisory - exhaust is leaking but not excessively noisy. A new exhaust gasket solved that.

a week later it expired just outside Ryaeder and hasn`t turned a wheel since so with a fixed/replacement engine this would fly through a new MOT

its been kept garaged ever since I`ve owned it

first £180 cash in my hand gets it and I`ll even throw in a Haynes manual and a Fuzz special heavy duty inner tube !

cheers

if you want to e mail me rather than pm (coz its not working very well) my e mail address is lee dot bromley AT ntlworld dot com (replacing dot with a . and AT with @ and no spaces as don`t want any spam rubbish !)

i had a 6 volt 70 engine that had this happen to it. well to be honest it was like it when i brought the bike but i knew about it. i had a good deal though. 10 pints to get the owner drunk and then pay him £15 before he sobers up. the little end was seized solid and i had to cut the conrod to remove the piston. as you can imagine the piston and block was in need of a desperate rebore. this was all caused by the oil strainer being blocked and also minimal oil in the engine. i think there was about 2 egg cupfulls. anyway i had the engine rebored and the crank reconditioned with a new conrod and pin etc and changed the cam chain while i was at it. all the pulleys and bearing were luckily still in perfect order so i saved a bit there. the head was untouched. i just fitted new valve seals and ground in the valves as a precaution. other new parts included new points, condensor and new clutch plates and springs
the engine actually consisted of a full 70 top end on a 50 gearbox.
the bike was back on the road 4 months after purchase in which it was fully gutted and given a good going over
