Oil cooler pros and cons

Post by lawman » Fri Feb 02, 2018 11:44 am

Mallory will be our first Plop. We are in the standard 90 class. The bike is about there now.

I was wondering what percentage of rides are running oil coolers and are they really needed?
They are not standard and people ride these bikes in very hot climates without problem.

My main reservation is the liability they present if you crash as it's hard to mount them in a "crash safe" area.

Don’t bother Dave ,Team Numpties have done quite a few now and never had a problem (fingers crossed )it’s just something else to go wrong , and if it does race over . That’s only my take on it ;)

It's frequently 40 C plus on hot tarmac over here, and the only overheating troubles I've had were when I was low on oil and running full tilt up a hill. Now that it's "winter" time with 20-25C temps, I don't think I could overheat my bike even if I wanted to.

Our Plop bike had an oil cooler for quite a few events.
It worked well, even crashed with it a few times and it came out unscathed.
Took it off eventually tho, after finishing one 8 hour race with most of the sump covering my right boot and back tyre! :o
By the end of the race it was being held on by cable ties and leaking from both pipes!

As Culfy says, just another thing to go wrong and not entirely necessary anyway.
Just keep a good eye on sump level when you refuel and keep it topped up throughout the event.

Thanks lads,
It's removed and sold on ebay!
One less thing to worry about as you say
Just the seat to build now and it's done!!

Ours is built out of 1/2 plywood with foam on top , hole cut out for petrol cap and fixed rigid with 6 rubber door stops underneath to space it off the frame , two at the front secured to the hinge fixing points , two central to just space it fixed to the seat only ,then two rear fixed to a home made bracket that’s fixed between the rear shock mounts .

Is it advisable to do something like that with the seat? I hadn't really considered it :?

Deffo the c90 seat weighs quite a bit and when you fuel your messing with the catch etc ,my first race a few years ago had the standard seat, then changed to the plywood one and it's far better ,it has got about an inch of foam and a waterproof fabric on .

Will suggest it to the boys - we're have a 'team' meeting tomorrow, though typically that means we just call each other knobheads and make no decisions or progress
