Cable operated rear brake

Post by lawman » Sat Sep 09, 2017 4:36 pm

Hi,
I am putting the finishing touches to a Plop bike that we are hoping to ride in 2018.

I'm converting to a rear brake using a handlebar lever and welding a bracket on the rear strut connecting the swing arm to the wheel.

I see that cables are available in all shapes and sizes and wondered if anyonr who had alrady done this could point me to a link for me to buy the right one first time.

If you have any photos of your asssembly, I would love to see them. Hope see you in 2018

Thanks.

I used a parking brake cable from a c50lac.

However mine was seized and never worked properly.

I used an L bracket from a bit of old steel off the rear brake torque arm and a big spring to help it rebound back.

The idea was good but I think I somewhat poorly executed it.

Pro tip: brakes are overrated. They slow you down!

I used a Honda Melody rear brake cable. Fits perfectly. Look forward to seeing you on the grid in 2018.

Cheers Garth (sent you a pm by the way),

I was thinking about riding round these circuits on a 90, Ive ridden them all on my CB500. I dont think there should be that much braking needed except only in a couple of places on each track.

I'm putting some bars on it with levers, a conversion kit came with the bike. I think the best bet is a a scooter rear cable of some description, it's just getting something that's more or less the right length with something like the correct end bits on.

Anyone else?

DAVE, the melody cable nipples work fine.
When you weld the cable lug onto the swinging arm, make sure you can remove the wheel!
I also used a 10mm diameter spring over the cable - between the hub lever & new lug to help the cable return. Good luck.

I was thinking of welding a lug to the bar linking the wheel to the swingarm. Iv'e ordered a cable OEM off ebay for £9.99 and will work it out when it arrives. I'll post up pics of the finished result. As long as it does skidz it will be ok and I'll have major ground clearance which will be good as it always scares me when things scrape on the ground!

See you on the grid, we even have a possible sponsor now for paintwork!! (one of the teams bosses).

Melody cable it was with a bit of 3mm steel with a hole in it welded to the rear torque arm, works perfect.
