Nifty Fifty2018

Post by culfy » Tue Mar 21, 2017 11:04 pm

Me and Alan are racing in the nifty fifty in 2018 and hope we don't have the start like this rider had at 2:15 :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ23UoqRZ2Q,but seriously I'm already looking forward to it. But thankfully it's only 6 weeks to Mallory.

That rider at 2:15 is my teammate, riding my Plop, who thought it would be a great idea to throw the bike over the start line rather than ride it over!!
Still have no idea what he was doing!

There's now at least seven Plop Enduro teams going over to Ireland next year for the Nifty Fifty.
Look forward to seeing you there Alan and Ian. Can't wait!! :D

Well we did the Nifty Fifty last Saturday and had a great weekend, myself Alan and Paul left Sheffield about 6.35 am Friday morning, in Paul's Peugeot SWB van, that I had built 3 bunks in a few days earlier and that was fully laden with essentials for a two night stay. We had a smooth journey to Holyhead getting there well in time for the 2.10 pm crossing.
After a cup of tea and a chill out we boarded the ferry about 1.30, and had a great crossing with a couple of pints for the non drivers. We met up with a few other teams that were on that ferry, and had a good "crack". After leaving the ferry and battling Dublin rush hour traffic we found Mondello park around 7 pm and claimed our pit by backing Paul's van in with about 1/2" to spare. Me and Paul took the bike to be scrutineered, and the leathers and helmets, so that we could relax the Saturday morning. As we did this, Alan russelled up a fantastic tea - new potatoes, peas, sweetcorn, steak pie and gravy, with a Peroni and a cup of tea to wash it down. After tidying up we bedded down after a long day. It was very cold outside but we were nice and snug in the van. The mandatory toilet visit about 3am was a cold walk to the toilets.
We all woke about 7:15 Saturday morning but felt quite relaxed, as we had got all the paperwork done the night before. Paul and Alan russelled up a very nice bacon, egg and sausage sandwich, and after a couple of cups of tea we were ready to go. This was our first Nifty Fifty and everything moved at a slower pace (which is not a problem by the way), just everybody walking round chilled out. The safety chat was about 10:30am, and the citing laps started at 10:45am. Now the Nifty Fifty starts Le Mans style, which is absolutely mental, but a good laugh. Alan held the bike, as Paul did the running - I just did the laughing. We had a great race with no major incidents and Mondello is a very nice track, quite tight. Only six corners in total but four of them are tight corners. Now the Plop Enduro's are for eight hours but the Nifty Fifty was only for four, and to be fair that was long enough, as it was freezing. About 1 hour 15 minutes before the race ended someone came and told us we were running third place in the C90 standard class. When the flag went down we had gone up to second.
After a celebratory pint and a lovely tea, again prepped by Alan, which was chilli and rice, we just relaxed and got the van ready and bedded down about 9:30pm in the pits again, ready for an early morning start, as we had to be at the ferry port for just before 7am. We had another great crossing and learned that the English teams, of which there were nine, had took first and second in the modified class and we had taken second in the C90 standard class and I think the other lads had done very well also.
So a quick round up we had a great weekend with great company. We were well looked after on the ferry by Graeme and were made to feel very welcome at Mondello. Roll on Mallory at the end of April.
