Tolerable but the Honda SLR 650 or Dominator is a better bike, in all cases you need to be a big lad if you plan on taking them on the really rough stuff.

big guy needs a big bike, got long legs and can barely squeeze on a gpz 500 but just love the old thumpers :D was looking at the honda but insurance and cost are too much and a yamaha man at heart 8-)

the reviews on the honda are hit and miss best traily bikes were made in the 80s and just simply and reliably just to get me to college and hopefully when found work.

XT 600 , I had a 1 year old one of these , in 1990.
Was one of the worst bikes Ive owned !
The camshaft runs directly in the alloy head, unlike the older XT500 that runs in ball bearing races.

I find the earlier XT500 much more reliable & better made....
I still have my trusty 1981 XT500 now !

Also enjoyed my Transalp 600 !

I buy a lot of parts from that seller.
Taking the head off my XT in a few weeks, doing a top end rebuild.
Honda 500 singles do suffer from cam & follower wear.
I have an XBR500 with modified oil lines to keep the top end lubed up !

Its quite a bit different now!
Fitted a new cam chain / rockers.
Sounds REALLY sweet, last owner kept the oil changed & it looks as if it paid off

the rfvc engines suffer top end wear when mal treated, change the oil and warm it up properly and they will do many miles, the xt on the top pics are ok but more agricultural than a honda, the mains have a tendancy to spin in the cases too, , not good,
id buy the honda every time

I had a XT 600 ,20 yrs ago,i used it for trail riding,i enjoyed the bike but always managed to fall of it and boy was it a dog to start if you was tired.
I remembered getting stuck in a bog, after falling off,by the time i had hauled it out of the bog i was to knackered to boot it up,ha ha happy memories, the bruises were enormous !
The bike didnt give me any mechanical probs but i didnt keep it long,i went back to a twin shock ty250 and was almost as quick and didnt fall of as much

I guess the problem with having the camshaft sat in the cylinder head in a motorbike is they rev a lot more and this causes wear and low oil is very damaging but most motorbikes have roller bearings to relieve the stress and keep wear down,

Fuzz name your price
