I keep buying bikes! i need help! Yamaha SR 125

Post by Cerberus73 » Mon May 30, 2011 12:14 pm

Well just went and bloody did it again... another bike, god im a sucker for a hard done to wee bike. this one.. 1993 Yamaha SR 125 Custom.... dent in top left of tank, speedo surround damaged (prob some kind of low speed off or dropped it) high mileage 38,900... tatty, tired, and feeling sorry for herself. gonna rat chop/bobber it. has 11 months MOT 12 month tax, and a huge service history, 2 owners from new. original owner used to drive her between aberdeenshire and glasgow weekly hence why mileage is high. guy i bought her from has owned it 4yrs, did 5000 miles on her in that time, but from looks he did basics of maintenance. on plus side i drove her 50 miles home with not a murmur, she sounds a bit tappety, so prob need a new timing chain, and cos of the mileage im gonna see if i can pick up a low mileage cylinder head as i imagine the cam, valve springs etc are tired and worn. they do tend to suffer from oil starvation on top end. clutch is sloppy, so need of new plates and adjustment i reckon, new oil and air filters, and a good service. cant moan i only paid £200 for her. and on journey home she sat at 60-65mph all the way just about, and wasn't gutsy on fuel either.

So now that gives me my C90 roaded, This SR 125 roaded, my RXS 100 as a project but running and my long term resto on my 1967 Triumph T10. i really need to stop buying bikes now 4 is enough! on a down note the C90ZZ i was after, the old dear who owns it will not sell, i have given up on her. maybe its a good thing.. i have enough to be going on with lol.

I know what you mean! It's hard to say no at £200 though. Looks a comfy seat and a Disc brake too.

oh it was very comfy on the journey home... no numb bum, no numb hands from vibration. could easily cover 150 mile journey easily comfort wise, if i can just get her running as reliably as i like my bikes to. i only intend using it for the long out of town duties as it can sit at near legal limit speed wise and don't feel like its being thrashed to reach that, engine seems a lazy low state of tune lump. ideal for distance. she is tired looking, so gonna strip her to bare legal minimum, get weight off, lot of crap added to give them a bit of bling, typical "factory custom" ie... lardy and underpowered. universal speedo since one on it is damaged, bates style headlamp as speedo is part of headlamp surround... mini indicators, single bobber seat (covers split on original) and if i can universal chopper front n rear mudguards... brakes are its good point i have to say, and the comfort... downsides... heavy, and no kick start, also starter motor is buried inside the engine. never came across that before i have to say, but truth be told im not much a fan of electric start bikes, usually steer clear unless it also has a kicker. but yep at £200 i would be churlish to moan.

Yep, any running & legal 125 for 200 quid can't be sniffed at. Good score!

Don't ask me for help! I've owned six in the last six years, all road registered. Time for a photo montage:

well i just went and bloody did it again... a hedgey fresh 1981 Kawa GPz 550... a acquaintance of mines drove the bike up until 18 months ago, the header pipe was shot, and it was a bit tatty... they parked it up on SORN, intended to get a good set of pipes for it and balked at the price... so it sat there unloved, and feeling sorry for its ickle self... so they needed a few bits for there comp which i happened to have laying about so i cut a deal bits for the bike, job done... so now own a mouldy red GPz.... with seized callipers and needing a lot of loving, cant moan she cost me nowt pretty much... bask in her mouldy goodness.

This is all very well Cerberus, but you are blowing serious Cub money here

Actually those bikes must be good work horses, they were much liked by the couriers.

yep good strong motors in them if looked after, same as the CX500 hondas, courier workhorses... thank god that one aint been couriered... looks like crap, but i know the motors good, as it was ran daily until 18 months ago. my sis has her eye on it and i may pass it over to her, it cost me nothing really. really needs a good clean and a couple hundred quids worth of bits on her, brakes serviced, new pads, header pipes, and a seat, and a general service... should pass a MOT and give a few more years service to my sis.

Cerberus, i've always loved the kwak fours....i reckon if you get that sorted and mint while the parts aren't too dear, it will really come into its own value-wise in another 10-15 years, isn't just quite 'old enough' yet if you know what i mean....but it will get there. A sleeper classic for tomorrow....
