latest CB300R any thoughts?

Post by roadster » Sun Feb 12, 2023 10:02 am

I have too many bikes! I'm thinking that the CB300 in its latest incarnation might replace both the beautiful little Grom and the Mash 400 scrambler. Reasoning is that the CB300 is not a lot bigger than the Grom for relaxed bimbling around the country lanes but is practically as quick as the Mash for 70+ on main roads and longer trips. Only down side that I can see is the Honda's small 10L fuel tank which will only provide a realistic range of about 140 miles.

There are other bikes with abut the same engine size but I am trying to stay clear of the sudo-racer high tail types. Has anyone tried the CB300R lately?

I've decided that its worth trying to sell the Mash scrambler so I'm about to put it on Ebay with a starting price well under half the list price I paid 18 months ago. For a bike that has done less than 1000 miles it should represent good value so if it does sell I might end up with the CB300 eventually. I'm will never be prepared to give up two wheels but I will concede that at a certain age light weight and low seat heights make good sense.

Just saying, a friend took a quick ride on my Hunter and sold his new model CB300R.
The J series Engine in the Royal Enfield suits me. Simple like me. Slow and smooth. So different from the CB300R.

Funnily enough that is also a good description of the Mash. It will run fast on motorways etc. but does not require/encourage spirited riding anywhere else.
When I got the Grom and rode around last autumn I had so much fun getting decent performance out of the little engine it started me wondering if one bike could have both characteristics.

I was all set to buy a CB300 after the attempted theft and sale of my SH300,the bars are quite wide so not so good for filtering ,Dad has a CB500x nice but again bit wide ,engine a bit bland .

Ended up buying a 400n superdream.put a rack on it and its been great all winter, plus historic so free tax ,ulez exempt no mot and 40 quid insurance .Also its really light, good steering lock and 45 odd hp so quick enough.

Im planning a 3 day French trip ,might even take this instead of the z900 !

Update:

The local Honda dealer happened to have a yellow CB300r in the showroom and the deal has been done. Goodbye Grom after a short but sweet affair and hello CB300. This is to some extent a milestone in my biking life because it is very unlikely that I will ever ride a faster bike again. With the exception of the classic Triumph of course but that will be ridden much more slowly than the CB300.

My initial impressions are very favourable and it seems that Honda are producing very entertaining single cylinder machines. They have responsive engines which produce dogged pulling power at low speed and yet plenty of excitement higher up the rev range. The noise is not so muted as might be expected and the growl when opening the twistgrip is music indeed. You don't get that from an electric motor! Once on the move it doesn't feel much heavier than the Grom. Its going to need some EBC HH brake pads to reduce the required lever effort and take advantage of the ABS, and I'm weighing up the possibility of some kind of screen. Can't wait to get some running in miles done.

Time for another update.

Running in nearly done and first oil and filter change completed. A number of small mods done:-

EBC front pads - Excellent feel and low lever effort.
Mudguard extensions front and back.
SP Engineering stainless exhaust can with two extra baffles to keep the noise reasonable - 2kg weight saving and very shiny!
Givi front screen - takes wind blast from waist height to chest height and breaks it up to be more comfortable.
USB power adapter wired to battery with independent fuse and switch.
Givi rear carrier extension arms.
Magnetic oil drain plug.
Pillion rests and brackets removed.

Engine and general performance brilliant as previously described. True top speed might just reach ninety but the engine will need to be running at over 10,000 rpm for that so I won't be doing it often, if at all. Speedo is very optimistic and close to the allowed 10% error.

Another fabulous ride taking advantage of yesterday's window of dry and bright weather in West Sussex. The CB300 engine continues to amaze. Civilized and gentle progress at low rpm in built up areas and exciting high rpm work on the open road. Its hard to believe that its a 286cc single cylinder when the wailing engine hits 8000 rpm and keeps on accelerating. Less than 9 litres of fuel to cover 150 miles even at this brisk pace.
