Honda MSX125 aka the Grom!

Post by urbanfireblade » Sun Mar 18, 2018 6:55 pm

Found myself missing owning a 125, by chance a friend was selling his new shape 2016 Honda MSX125, less than 1,000 miles on the clock, owned from new....so i've taken the plunge and bought it :D, i sold my 2yr old Kawasaki ER6N and renewed my insurance all at the same time, so i've ended up with a brilliant fun little bike, 150% increase in mpg, cheaper insurance and money in the bank!

Straight off the bat i had a 52 mile ride home , that was a good way of getting to know what i've just bought, found the speedo was rather optimistic! Haha, 13% to be precise. And also the handling was proper twitchy around corners on those 12" wheels, it feels like your sitting ontop of that front wheel .

In the past week i've given it a oil change, new spark plug, adjusted the valve clearances, checked, tweaked, and fettled a few things. Really just getting to know it and giving it the once over.

I calibrated the speedo to GPS using a HealTech Speed Healer and find 55-57mph is a 'real world' achievable speed with the +1tooth larger rear sprocket. That'll probably read 61-63mph on most car speedos as they're all about 10% over by law so i won't be too slow on the faster roads.

Bonus on the MSX125 is they run tubeless tires so no worrying about punctures like i did on the Innova, now i just carry a simple puncture kit with plugs, glue and air cannisters.

Considering how many of these little bikes Honda have sold, i've only seen one locally, during my commute back and forth to work last summer.

Done about 180 miles so far and have to say i'm smitten :D. It's a cheeky little thing, simple engine is derived from the Innova, 9bhp and 102kg wet weight, modern LED headlight, fuel gauge, fuel injection, daytime front running lights(indicators stay iluminated but flash if turning left or right) help make you more visible to other road users, has small amount of storage under seat for a puncture kit, spare fuses, spare tools etc, i love it!

I had an early MSX, they are lots of fun. I had an arrow can fitted which sounded great. The airbox mod didnt make any benefit to mine. The next upgrade to make is to get rid of the shite stock' slippy when wet' tyres. Fantastic bikes, have fun. :D

I do like Groms, the ideal take away bike. The local scumbags pick them up and take them away in pick up trucks. :o

Like Cubs they can become an obsession. A local guy has over £9,000 invested in one of his. :D

A good mate of mine went to the German Dieselbike rally on a Grom....

He said his arse started hurting befor he got to Dover (lives in Horsham), only another 400 miles to go after landing on Calais.

Then there was the return leg....

There's a whole world of modifications available for them :)

For me, the big bonus is that they're so small - I'd be able to get it into the shed dead easily or even the porch.
