Re: WK GTR300 Scooter electrical problems

Some time ago I fried the battery on my SH300 copy by riding at 60-65 mph up the A38/M1 for almost 4 hours.I was taken home by Carol Nash's rescue service ,which was very good.I bought new battery and a volt meter to check what the charging rate was .Turns out it was between 17 and 20 volts which I understand to be way too much. I assumed the regulator/ rectifier was up the shoot but having checked this with a multimeter, using a method I found on YouTube,it seems it's OK.
That's about my electrical knowledge used up so any advice on what could be the problem would be greatly appreciated.

I should have said that one of the connectors was corroded, but could this have caused the problem?

Hi John, Far from being an electrical guru i'm most likely a bit dense when it comes to electrics.
My hunch would be to try substitution with another similar R/R
But first i would clean all the corrosion off and cover the terminals with either silicone grease or Vaseline. Then check those voltages again.

I would think the reg/rec is at fault.

The only way I can see the voltage rise is if the earth tag was corroded and provided a resistance between the reg rec and earth so it would give a false reading when trying to reference the output voltage.

I'd concur. The clue is in the description rectifier/regulator.

If you are getting 17V to 20V it ain't regulating.

Doesn't the WK GTR300 use a copy of the old Helix motor? If I'm right and it does you may be able to find a used Helix rec/reg on ebay that is a straight swap. Adding a bit of Honda genuine OEM quality into the mix won't do any harm.

It wasn't the earth tab that was corroded, but one going to a diode,so I'll order a new rec/reg and try it.
Thanks for the help.

Just to fill you in on this continueing story I have ordered a new rec/reg but as it's going to take 4 weeks to arrive,I have cleaned up the "old" one and refitted it,to keep the scooter on the road.Took it out yesterday and was surprised to see the charging voltage has dropped to 15 volts, which I think is ok.

I not run it or recommend a customer to do so
It will fry the battery and the over volts may fry the ECU
