Honda NTV650 charging question

Post by pete07bikes » Mon May 01, 2017 4:20 pm

Hello,
I've recently bought an NTV650 and discovered it isn't charging the battery
The bike has 2 rectifiers (original & replacement fitted back to back) and if I connect the alternator wires to either rectifier I get the same result on the multi-meter. So I think it must be the alternator stator.
My question is can I just put a new/replacement stator in the engine alternator cover (4 bolts) or do I need to replace the alternator rota as well?

Thank you in advance for your replies
Pete

The rotor will be fine (it's just a bunch of magnets in a steel casing so little to go wrong).

Thanks for the reply DD, Since my post I've been to see a fellow with a multi=meter and had it confirmed that the stator is fine and its the Rectifier that's at fault (both of them are naff).
Decision time now - do I go for a new genuine Honda one, a pattern one or a used one
or even a hong-kong one and adapt the wiring

Your thoughts?

Thanks

I'm guessing its just a 3 phase stator (3 yellow wires),

I've never had cause for complaint buying from Vehicle Wiring Products..

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/p ... -regulator

BUT - you must check the output as these reg/rec's are only suited to 200w

It would be a good idea to check the bike's wiring before fitting yet another reg/rec, it's likely there is a cause why they are blowing and it's more often a loose connection somewhere.

Be glad it's not a Triumph as nutters tend to wire in both headlamps as dip and main, fit high output bulbs then use the flash button to illuminate all 4 elements in the bulbs....then the loom catches fire and destroys the cdi box, the stator burns out and the owners wonder why it costs a grand to repair.

Scratch the above - just looked up the output for the bike and it's 345 watts.

Jeepers that's half a HP constant drag if it's not a field controlled alternator.

Thanks again DD, it's a 7 wire rectifier - 3 yellows from the alternator stator in one block and 4 wires (2 red/white & 2 green) in the other block

Hope that makes sense

my Simple guide

Simple battery / charging tests works almost all bikes over 250cc

Charge battery !
1 a charged battery should have 12.5 volt or more across it
2 start engine
idling 12.8v or more
reving to 1/2 revs 13.8v / 15v
more than 15 volts regulator part rec/reg is dead
less the 13.8 no or poor charge

Stator test
three wires out usually yellow or white

any one to -ve (earth) grater than 30M ohms
between ay pair (three tests between 0.3 and 2 ohms

REG reg if stator test good and charge poor or over volts (with good charged battery ) rec/reg is duff

that rec/reg would die fast lots of pattern and used ones out there

Reasonable price for the rectifier - now ordered one

Good guide Dave - just what I needed
