Silverwings !!!

Post by knapdog » Sat Dec 03, 2016 1:03 pm

To complement capitano's thread on Goldwings, does anyone have any views on the GL650 Silverwing?
I know they only made them for one year (1983) and thus should be fairly sought after. They're not the best lookers but by all accounts the engines just go on and on and on....

Any downsides I need to look out for?

Most of the early problems with the bikes were sorted a long time ago ,bodywork is hard to come by the rear box that replaces the pillion is very rare.
They are covered by the CX500Forum in the USA google it .A 650 turbo would be really nice.
Big fuel tank and lots of torque make them easy to ride ,has it got a radio ?

There are certainly speakers on the "dashboard".

I have never owned one but rumour has it that they are very top heavy.

Having moved from a slightly top heavy motorcycle, my old CB 500, to a maxi Scoot with a really low C of G I think this is quite important. The maxi is much easier to handle but weighs the same as the old bike.

Just me :P

I did nearly ride through a roundabout on a CX500, went on to buy a NTV650 which handled much better.
A good Deauville will be hard to find soon, and in the 3 years since they were deleted there has been no better replacement.

For many, the Deauville ticks most of the boxes but for me it's just too "dull".

i had a silverwing. ok they were a bit top heavy, after all they were an unaltered gl1000 goldwing fairing mounted on a cx500 chassis. but they were uber comfy and you could literally cross a continent on one without needing the services of an osteopath. engine had the usual early cx camchain rattles but by now they must have all been apart several times and once the camchain or more precisely, the tensioner mechanism is sorted they are the sort of engine that will easily run for ever and a day. pretty much unburstable. i loved mine and if i had the need to do those sort of distances again, i would want to do them on one of these. better on juice and lighter than a wing, less maintainance needed than a bmw, and dirt cheap to buy still.

I owned two standard CX500s and they were certainly top heavy, much more than the later CB500. You did get used to it very quickly though, and they used to crack on and handle extremely well. Both mine surprised a few folk, scratching around South Yorks in the early 80s. :)
