Are they rubbish/hard to work on/expensive spare parts with poor availability?

Hang on a second Arry. I do believe you were dissing my Piaggio not so long ago. I bet you are about to steal the X8 off some recently bereaved widow who knows nowt about bikes/scooters or their value. I can hear it now. ' Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your dead husband, but don't worry, I'll clear the garage/shed out for you free of charge luv. Just give me a bit of petrol money for the run to the tip'.
I bet I'm not far off the truth there eh Arry :?:

That depends upon how they've been treated.

The Piaggio Leader motor is one of the best they produced.

I always found Piaggio spares easily obtained and significantly cheaper than Jap ones. The downside is you'll probably need more of them.

Thanks for your help Capitano, I've seen a couple of non runner,or Cat C damaged models that looked pretty tidy and they were only about £150 and that got me interested. Being a cynical, pessimistic, glass half empty kind of person, I thought there must be a catch, but from your experience, I shouldn't be too scared. Glynn: I had a look at the chapter relating to ethics in my copy of Boggers Big Book of Bike Buying and amazingly there was just one page...A BLANK PAGE.

Like most CVT scoots Harry, it's usually the splines on the crank that go if they have not been maintained so if it's reasonably low mileage and runs OK then go for it and buy the highest moly content grease you can possibly find - there is a Honda specific 60% moly grease for splines but it's not available in the UK.

Same for the rear clutch bearing, as it runs directly on the rear shaft so live with really good quality grease (not moly on this end).

Dry lube the rollers and variation ramps and they won't flatten out and last at least twice as long.

Most of your time will be spent on plastic repairs when you snap off the panel fittings -Plastex works fine.

DD's post remings me. You will get what you pay for with rollers.

Cheap ones from ebay work fine if you want to experiment with weight and how it affects acceleration and top speed. Genuine or decent ones last longer.

Only fit genuine Piaggio belts. Do not be fooled by aftermarket ones with "good" names like Malossi and Polini etc. Genuine ones last as long as the service intervals and often more. Pushing a 125 scooter 6 miles with a shredded belt isn't the best experience but it is a learning one! :D
