R1200RT damaged wheel rim

Post by knapdog » Tue Oct 11, 2016 3:48 pm

Had a front wheel puncture, took wheel off and had a Pilot Road 4 GT fitted at my local garage who I've been going to for years, particularly for car tyres.
Got home and noticed that he'd damaged the rim.
Took it back and his reply was that accidents happen and what more could he do than use a plastic sheath on the rim.
He has suggested that I take it to BMW to see what they can do. My reply was yes but at your cost. His reply was "depending on how much they are going to charge".
I'm taking it in this afternoon and they've already estimated the cost will be around £150.
Any thoughts of wisdom out there empathising with my predicament?
I wouldn't mind so much if it was getting on a bit but it's only a year old, 4700 miles and not a mark anywhere else.

God knows. We've spent thousands there over the last 30 years.

They are a business, therefore they should have insurance to cover this sort of thing, if they haven't, serve them right! Either way, they are responsible for the damage and must pay for repair/replacement.

you can get the rim repaired, have a quick google for your area

your tyre fitter must display his insurance by law so nip along and snap a pic, it would be in his interest not to have a claim against it

Billyfix has recommended a specialist wheel refurbishment place in Cardiff that will be about a third of the cost of the BMW dealer.

I feel your pain!!
I am contemplating having the XB's scruffy wheels powder coated but am very fearful of having all of that expense mullered by some ape with tyre irons! Even thinking of getting Abba (Stands not Dancing Queens) DIY tyre kit. Not sure I would like to learn on BMW wheels though, with the pressure sensors.
Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction! :)

Thanks Chris.
It was the tyre pressure sensors that informed me of the slow puncture in the first place. I then had to stop twice on the 10 mile journey home to replenish with air.

Well then, I suppose the upside is that they do work. :D
