I would consider a Maxi-Scooter, Burgman 400 or 400 Majesty or a Deauville 650, you need dry feet protection and good bodywork. A Burgman will do over 70 mpg.
A Deauville has Shaft drive, very important if you ride through the winter.
I did a 70 mile round trip each day on a MZ TS 250/5, not recommended, time moves on.
ABS is a positive, it has saved me once on a Burgman 650 and once on my current bike, a Deauville.
I owned a Honda S-Wing 125 ABS last year, and if I was commuting and wanting to save money, it would be my first choice, 100+mpg, a silent cruising speed of 60mph, fully automatic, and good lights and brakes ABS, full weather protection and good storage. They are made in Italy and seem to be very good quality.

I used a 250 Foresight Maxi Scoot.
80 mpg, 70+ on the motorway, 200 mile tank range when commuting and very comfy too.
And you can fit a walking stick in the underseat bin.
Tubeless tyres = easy puncture repair.
280 watt alternator so heated grips don't bother it.

yup, or a good oilhead, the rockster isnt pretty but it is a good bike,r80rob wrote:Did 10 years commuting on bikes my favorite was the Bmw r80rt ( hence the name on here, only bike I wish I never sold) great weather protection and very easy to repair and source parts for, sadly going up in value now due to cafe racer fad author the k range is still extremely cheap - about 800 for a mot'ed k100rt - that would be my choice now.

I'm glad I bought it from you, though Rob. If it ever has to go, I'll give you first refusal on it - seems only fair!r80rob wrote:Did 10 years commuting on bikes my favorite was the Bmw r80rt ( hence the name on here, only bike I wish I never sold)
Needs a carb strip atm - will drop all the parts in the ultrasonic cleaner at work, that'll sort them out. Will give me a chance to check the diaphragms too, I suspect they might be going south.

Squeegee, I may have some service parts left over from my airhead encounters, would you care for them - gratis.

I used to bodge my Bing diaphragms with wet suit repair glue...they were bloody expensive from the BMW dealer......
