is any moped or bike more economical than an innova?
I am impreesed by web stories on this site and elsewhere about the innova being economical even 164 mpg reported in this link:-
http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.p ... -9680.html
I was just wondering what other mopeds or bikes can match or beat it. (For going around town or slow country lanes, even slow touring.) Can small mopeds or autocycles be more economical?
My guess would be the innova wold be the best there is as smaller engines tend tobe of an older designed

You're going to be hard pressed to find one if there is. Maybe the new fuel injected C50 or Vision 50. Can't say, the Innova is friggin economical though.
Re: is any moped or bike more economical than an innova?
Basically, if two engines are of similar efficiency they'll use similar amounts of fuel at the same speeds if they are both in their engine's 'comfort zone' because it takes the same power to shove a similar sized/weight/tyre sized bike along at say 40mph whether it has a 50, 110 or 125 cc engine. however, an Innova will bowl along at 55 quite easily and still be well within it's engine speed range while a fuel injected 50 will not be. it is likely the Innova is more economical at half throttle at 50mph than a 50cc bike would be flat out at he same speed. Also, the torquey Innova long stroke engine climbs hills well in top gear whereas a smaller engine may have to downshift.
the Innova is right on top of it's maximum torque curve point at 32 mph in top gear so again, will pull well up inclines without downshifting at slower speeds. A 50cc bike may well not be quite as good, although they are lower geared.
They are very good machines...

Wind resistance needs to be factored in. The bike that won in 2011 was a 250 at 157mpg.

It's fascinating stuff isn't it. i'd love to have the skills time and knowledge to fabricate a wind cheating shell for the innova like that Dutch guy did... he was getting around 250 mpg out of his!Dogsbody wrote:Wind resistance needs to be factored in. I've noticed a dramatic change in economy around somewhere around 50-60 mph depending on the vehicle. Below that, great gains are achieved, hit the 'wall' and above, and lots of fuel is needed. i know physics says it's a linear progression of drag, but there's something going on because a Tour de France cyclist maxes out at around 50 and almost all Cubs irrespective of size seem to hit the end of their 'happy' running there. My old diesel Auto Lucida would return 38 mph at 50 but low to mid twenties at higher speeds. i know motorcycles are very poor in aerodynamic terms (worse than articulated lorries!) and Cubs are even worse than standard bikes because of the seating position negatively effecting the height/length ratio
I believe this new VW is the most significant vehicle this century and will be the shape of personal vehicles of the future...Although the three wheeled version may well be the actual answer...

PS- re Vetter don't forget that USA gallons are smaller than ours, so even better mpg figures . Dogsbody

10uk gallon is roughly 12us gallon
Re: is any moped or bike more economical than an innova?
Quick update, my innova just did 139.8 mpg and when it went onto it's flashing last digit it required 2.6 litres to top it back up. I'm riding a little slower at the moment as I'm not wearing many clothes!
