Hello!

Post by Lobotomy » Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:49 am

Hi, I have a 1959 Honda C100 with numerous problems and I came here looking for help. I know it isn't a C90, but it's close enough!

Welcome to C90 Club. Definitely the oldest Cub on this board by a couple of years! :D We didn't get imports to the UK until November '62.

Welcome aboard indeed! Lucky fellow having such an early C100 too, as Boo says i think you've jumped straight into the top slot of oldest cub on here :) There's quite a few C100's owned by members of the forum, so you are in the right place.....I think up to now i have the oldest UK C100 on here, is a 1962 model with the license plate holder built into the frame, but registered 22nd Feb 1963. Enjoy yourself here, and you will find some great help too.....

Best part about it is that I bought it on craigslist for $300 (£196).

At the time the only problems were a really bad rattlecan paintjob, no battery, missing nonfunctional parts and a duct taped seat. It has fantastic (read: better than stock) compression, and I have no idea how or why, but I won't question it.

Luckily I'm an auto body technician and took care of problem one quite fast.

Here's what it looked like when I bought it (spoilered for large images):

And now it looks like this while I'm trying to figure out front suspension issues:

Bargain price. Nice resto too! :D
Have a check of your frame number against the table here..

Looking closer at your pics, a few details make me think it's later than a 1959. The engine I know could have been swapped (later clutch adjuster) , as could the brakeplate with speedo drive (it was separately on the left until about '61), but the frame itself looks later too.. legshields had separate mounting screws instead of being clamped on the top engine mountings and it appears not to have the holes.

For all I know, it very well could be later, but not by much. I'm pretty sure it is at the latest a 1961 or 1962, due to it having flaws related to the original revisions of the bike. I'll figure out the frame number tomorrow, as it was obscured by the new paint a little bit.

It was advertised as a 1959 in the Craigslist ad, and unfortunately I have no paperwork to prove it. I didn't know I could find out through the frame number though, so this helps.

That and I know the previous owner owned a ton of these and probably built this one up from parts he had lying around.
