Hi,

I'm in North Devon. "Back into biking" in 2006, with a GSF650, GTR1400, MSX125 and Z1000SX

Have a C90 I bought in '84 from John Fowler's in Pompey. It spent 94~98 outside unused, and been dry stored since then. Prior to 94 it was variously used by myself and my Brother. Odo says 12000 miles, but I suspect it did many more with a broken speedo cable (haven't they all?)

Frame No C90-5190729

I believe the original engine (C90E5190723) was scrapped by my Brother, and replaced with another. The original had all 3 gears forward, whereas the currently fitted engine has a BIG neutral between 1st and 2nd .... and points on the end of the cam shaft.

Starting a Restoration on it just now (frame appears sound). Trying to get it as close to original as possible, but I'm tempted by a Chinese engine to simplify things. Do any of the Chinese engines work properly in the frame, reusing the stock a box and swan-neck?

Any info on the exact model I have would be appreciated.

Regards

Nije

Welcome to the club. The answer to your question is Yes and the most popular one is the Lifan 110.It has 4 gears, semi auto is the easiest to fit,but a manual is available, and this makes it very much easier to keep up with modern traffic and climbing hills.
Your '84 C90 should be a 12 volt. So the Lifan is a plug and go replacement, although you will need accarb spinner to get it to connect to the original air filter.
There's plenty of info on the site revthis engine.Use the search facility.

The Lifan is a very good swap, but your bike is a 6 volt 90 going by the frame number ,so to fit the later 12volt style engines you will need a bracket .There should be a lot of threads on fitting other engines on here and Dr ATV in America is a good source of brackets.
And welcome to the club as always rough location in your details and the year of the bike .Get sorted and join us on The Isle of Wight in August.

Yea its a 6V with round headlight version. Don't mind converting to 12V if I have to, but would like to keep it kickstart only, with carb/af configuration per stock. ......

A bit more digging .... I think it's a C90Z-Z and the engine is from a C90Z-2 ..... Happy to be corrected ...
