C90 cruising speed ??

Post by mrvon » Mon May 15, 2017 7:46 pm

Hi,
After doing a top end rebuild and running engine around town and a few 20 mile rides etc,I decided to do a long ride.
As my Son did his first long ride from our home in deal to Hastings i thought sod it Brighton here i come. This was my first long bike ride in about 30 years so was wondering if the bike and myself would manage it.Well clocked up just under 200 miles and the bike never missed a beat,i wish i could say the same for my @ss and back {please no you should not have gone to Brighton jokes}.It was great getting out on the C90 as its biking where you can enjoy the scenery the bike i must say went like a rocket.I dont know what cruising speeds you guys do but the bike was happy as Larry from about 40 to off the clock. On the way back with home getting closer i thought sod it ill ring its neck,so for 30 miles or so was doing between 50 and to sitting on the MPH wording no problems and the bike still wanted a little more.As i didnt want to blow the engine i resisted the urge for head down and see what the VNE is lol.
I know every bike is different but would be interesting to know the speeds you guys cruise at.I will get my son to post a few pics as i cant seem to get Flickr to work on here.
Regards

On a 12v C90 i use the following as my touring mantra;-
50mph (speedo reading or GPS as they are both the same on my bike) or WOT, whichever is the slowest.

Shouldn't a 1997 speedometer read more than 50 mph ?

On my C90 I have found that the longer the journey the better it goes cruising speed wise. Returning from Norfolk last year, heavily overloaded, once on the A12 I was maintaining 55 and seeing 60 occasionally on the satnav. Had to keep backing off as I am aware that the bike is on 40,000 miles and I do have some mechanical sympathy. This is with standard gearing and a screen, after a weekend of being ragged around Norfolk.
Normally I would say that 47-50 is the norm.
Reminds me of the early 70's when I had a 1959 Beetle with the 30bhp engine. That would do 65 flat out every day. On a long motorway run it would very gradually achieve more until cruising at an indicated 80 (well, I think it was around the "E" on the fuel gauge as think the speedo only went to 70).

Speed limit here is 50 kph, so I do that for the fuel economy fun. Usually can clock over 200 mpg on a good running 90 at that speed, but if I take it to 70 or 80 I usually end up around 120 or less mpg.

Dunno what speed mine does -

'more than everybody else'

How does that sound!

110's don't like to rev as much as 90's so although they are quicker but you will catch up on the long straights and watch them weep into their beards (at least that's the case with Rob and Steve.....)
