What's the most useful item you have taken on a trip.
A group of us are booked to ride through France to Spain in June and would like to know what is the most useful item you have taken on a long distance trip.

A small adjustable spanner.
The one time I didn't take it, I needed it and had to buy another. Just for small adjustments, wing mirrors, brakes etc. (mainly because I'm not able to do anything else mechanical anyway, especially on the road. )
Oh, and one of those multi knife/tool things.

I don't think you'll get very far without your passport, seriously a meths stove is one of my musts, its simple to use, nothing to break and ready available fuel. in france meths is called alcool 90% and its clear, not purple like here

Yes. Kettle and stove. Look for a stesco stove. Runs on petrol and a lovely compact bit of kit. Saves two lots of fuel

Thermal underwear & a hat - adds another season to your sleeping bag.
Microfibre towell, still gets you dry even when wringing wet.
Trips longer than a weekend - petrol stove and a T piece in the fuel line.
Thin cotton neck scarf, emergency everything cloth.
Hand cleanser for WHEN you break down.
Ibuprofen for day 3 onwards.
Sense of humour, and a willingness to forgive others their 'foibles'.

Those Craghopper type trousers with all the pockets and the zip around the knee so you can turn them into a pair of shorts.
