Hi there,

New to the forum and on the lookout for a nice C90 or C70. As original as possible with a good history are must haves. Needs to be an early model with the round headlight and indicators. Location not an issue however if you're at the other end of the country be prepared for lots of questions and requests for numerous pics 👍

Thanks

Put your whereabouts in your profile or we won't know which end is the other end of the country. :D

As he's a Geezer with a Golf probably not a million miles from my gaff.
We seem to have run out of early C90's.
Welcome to the club.

I know. You'd think with over 100 million made there would be a few to choose from

I spent over 12 years looking for a worthwhile early one that wasn't over priced in my opinion. I looked at quite a few in the £1000 area but all were either rotted badly at the rear, or had been repaired there because of rot. None that I saw looked even remotely competently done either. It needed to be pre-1972 as I wanted the earlier front forks/brake with the torque bar linkage. Later models all used the C50/70 front ends so when you brake the front of the bike jumps up!!!! The torque bar stops this.........

Then, late last year, out of the blue the one I now have turned up. A "shed" find, fairly local to me, following a house clearance. It was well under my max price too. It had been laid up in the shed since the early 1970's... It came with an old card VE60 log book, and keys, plus a few other bits and was largely complete, missing just the rear chain, some spokes and, oddly, one mirror. It still had the original tyres on it!

It did need a lot of fettling though as I needed to get it running and through an MOT before DVLA would register it, a requirement no longer needed under the new May 20th 2018 rules, but now it's road legal, running well and great fun to buzz about on. There is a post about it in the projects section. I used the excellent V765 service that the VJMC offer (I am a member) which was straightforward and didn't take too long. Luckily all the numbers on the bike matched those on the VE60.

I still need to tear it down and do the paintwork, but will now likely wait until later this year. I also plan to strip and check the engine, fitting a manual clutch and 4-speed gear cluster in the process. For now though I'm enjoying riding the wee thing too much!

So unless you're prepared to spend more than I would consider one worth, you'll need to be very careful inspecting the rear mudguard/suspension mounting area (and boy can these rot!) if you don't want to have to weld it up. I do have the kit (MIG & TIG) but wanted a frame that didn't need such drastic work, which I've now got.....

Be prepared to be disappointed. If a good one comes up and you delay too long, all the photo requests and questions will be in vain.

It's a seller's market at the moment, chap. Despite the numbers made, demand still outstrips supply.

So, if you find one, make a decision quickly. If you think that one is overpriced, that's your own opinion. It will likely still sell to someone.

I hear what you're saying. I'm prepared to act quickly if it's a good un. Hopefully the seller will have already taken pics in the likelihood someone will want to see them rather than the obligatory one or two pics you get from Gumtree/EBay sellers

Due to pressure from the Mrs about my newly purchased 1980 C70 I might have to consider selling it...Like you I searched in vain to find a good one....Mine has done 5,800 miles from new,the engine runs beautifully--as you'd expect with very low mileage..Considering it's age the chromed rims are quite good, the silencer has surface rust--but still sound-no holes.Nice topbox included.New battery(Fitted yesterday)fresh oil and air filter, good tyres.(MOT'd last week)..No rust, paintwork has had a "blow-over"by someone in the past but it looks fine.Front brake isn't as good as my'97 lecky start--might need adjusting....Footrest bar needs straightening---I might be doing that later...I'm in Stourbridge West Midlands....KC.
