I reckon You'll need to sand the legshields. Work up to as fine a grade as you have the patience for. Then, with care, judicious application of heat may bring back the shine, but it takes care and practice, easy to scorch them.

I use a butane pencil torch, moving quite quickly, working a small area. I done the mudguards on the XL 350 using this method, came up well.

Yeah ...I've considered sanding as an option. I'll go that route if the salon bleaching doesn't work. I DID try household chlorine bleach, with no luck. I've heard about the torch method before .....wish i had a junker leg shield to practice on!!

Yeah ...I'm sanding now. Non of bleaching products worked ...not even a little tiny bit. The orange (amber gasoline) stain is just too deep into the plastic. So ...I'm going to go thru the sanding process (coarse grits down to real fine grit) and then see if I can bring a bit of shine back with one of those Gel-Gloss kitchen and bath products. Will report any positive progress. If I need to resort to painting afterwards, any suggestions on matching colour spray paint specifically designed for painting plastics?

Painting the plastics is a bit of a pain on these as the paint likes to flake off easily. It's somewhat hit and miss, but for best results I've found that using 2 part automotive filler primer (white) topped with automotive urethane seems to "stick" the best, but not without rigorous and fastidious sanding with 400 grit paper. I've spray several leg shields however, and none of them worked all that brilliantly to be honest. The paint just doesn't like to stick to it that well.

Next thing I was going to try was plastidip as my nephew just sprayed his plastic fenders with it (for a matte look) and it seems to be holding up alright after a few months.

I was thinking of the rattle-can paints formulated especially for plastics ..like the Krylon Fusion products (http://www.krylon.ca/products/fusion-for-plastic/) I've used them successfully on resin lawn furniture and the finish has lasted for years. My plan is to sand everything down, and finish up with something 400 grit before painting. If you're suggesting other paint products / processes, please tell me brand names and more details. I have the busted plastic front fender (not sure if it is the same type of plastic as the leg shield?) so maybe I'll practise on that first. Thanks for adding your comments ...

Been 'vewy, vewy quiet' around here lately (as Elmer Fudd would say) .......
I can't seem to find specific paint codes for the red paint that Honda used on these bikes. Some say it was 'Monza Red R110' (VMR 765-60) ...some say it was called Tahitian Red. I've checked out rattle can paint and have found 2 'near matches' (I think...): 'Krylon Fusion Pepper Red Gloss' and Rustoleum Sunrise Red 211367. VMR wants $70 for an 8 oz can of their Honda paint .......wow!
Short of removing a red metal part that has not been faded (much) from 50 + years of exposure to the elements, and taking it to a professional paint supply shop to have them replicate the colour, does anyone the Honda universe have any other suggestions???

Match the plastics as close as you can from a professional supplier (they will mix and put into 1K cans)

You really shouldn't paint the plastics anyway so it would provide the best effect.

Remember the underside of the seat should be blue.....

Thanks for the reply! I have obtained a replacement 'red' front plastic fender from a supplier in Thailand, so I guess I should try to color-match the red paint for the metal to the red on the new fender. I have a professional paint supplier that I've used in the past to colour-match automotive paint ...so perhaps I'll give them a try. They charge $35 CDN for one rattle can.
Everyone seems to be 'off' on painting plastic ...but both Krylon and Rustoleum offer 'plastic specific' spray paints. I've used the Krylon rattle-can paint on plastic (resin?) lawn furniture with great success, as the lawn furniture has been thru many years of outdoor use (much more than my refurbed bike will EVER see) and never shown any signs of flaking, etc. I may have to end up painting the legshield if I can't remove the stains ...and then the side covers as well. I found a Rustoleum shade that is very close ....and seems to match the off-white of the seat cover as well.

Underside of seat: yes ...it was blue when I got the bike, but I wasn't sure if that was correct or not. I just figured Honda's workers had grabbed whatever colour came by on the conveyor belt. (so ...did the blue bikes have black under-seat colour? lol ) There were some rough spots on the blue, and I had a can of semi-gloss black on hand. Too late to change it now that I have the seat all re-done. But, thanks for the info.
